Mark Grovesteen, WAN Board member, commissioned panels in memory of friends and
relatives of Williamsburg residents for the
AIDS Memorial Quilt.
The idea of creating panels for a Williamsburg Memorial AIDS Quilt had been around for several years. Grovesteen used his energy and talents to move the idea from intent to reality. He contacted the NAMES Project Foundation to learn the dimensions, material requirements, and the procedure for submitting panels for the National AIDS Memorial Quilt. He talked with friends and relatives of those chosen for panels in order to develop ideas for panel designs. Rosemarie Kammer, a Williamsburg artist, teamed up with Grovesteen to create and produce the panels.
The Kephart Foundation underwrote the cost of designing and creating these panels, which were subsequently submitted to the NAMES Project Foundation. The NAMES Project Foundation combined all of the panels on one quilt square. As a part of the National AIDS Memorial Quilt of the NAMES Project Foundation, these panels have been on display throughout the country.
The panels created in Williamsburg are shown below. For a larger picture of each panel, please click on its corresponding icon below.
